ABSTRACT:
Fossil fuels are the major resource used for worldwide energy generation. The use of fossil fuels is undesirable due to the limited resource availability, production of greenhouse gases, and global warming during energy generation processes. Therefore, renewable energy sources are the world’s major focus for the next energy resource. These are highly abundant and pursue excessive energy content. The renewable sources for use in off-grid energy systems, including solar PV, hydropower and wind energy, are discussed in this paper. Off-grid energy systems are the systems that are disjoint from the power distribution grids and have their own generation and storage mechanisms. The energy generation techniques through renewable sources for remote and isolated areas in an off-grid scheme are reviewed. The energy consumption sectors of the rural and isolated areas are reviewed, which take energy from the local off-grid systems.
